Menstrual disorders

Heavy periods, intermenstrual bleeding, irregular periods, and absence of periods are menstrual disorders.

 

Heavy periods – It can be due to hormonal imbalance, fibroids, endometriosis or adenomyosis. It can be treated with medications, contraceptive pills, Mirena coil, endometrial ablation and hysterectomy.

 

Intermenstrual bleeding – It can be due to abnormal smear, polyps or cervical erosion (ectropion).

 

Irregular periods – It can be due to hormonal imbalance, polycystic ovaries and increased weight. It is associated with lack of regular ovulation.

 

Absence of periods – When a girl does not start menses by the age of 16 years, it could be due to congenital abnormalities of womb and vagina or failure of ovaries. This is called primary amenorrhoea.

In secondary amenorrhoea menstrual cycle ceases due to hormonal imbalance, ovarian failure or at times due to long-term hormonal contraception.

 

Endometrial ablation (Minitouch) - Patients with heavy menstrual bleeding we offer transvaginal ultrasound, hysteroscopy (camera test to check lining of womb) and biopsy along with endometrial ablation using a new technique –Minitouch ablation under local anesthetic or sedation so that patient can go home as early as 10-15 minutes.
